Ethnicity and Nationalism News Bites: March 19 – 23, 2013

  • The L.A. Times (23/3/13) reports on the death of Chinua Achebe, the acclaimed Nigerian writer, often called the grandfather of  modern African and post-colonial, literature. His novels have played an important role in debating national and ethnic African identities in the era of decolonization.
  • OpenDemocracy.net (19/3/13) features an article on the possibility of a “European Spring,” by which the region can become a “cosmopolitan society of national societies.” Another article explores the limits of liberalism and European society.

Call for Review Articles on Ethnicity, Nationalism and Education

Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism (SEN) is currently seeking authors to write reviews for our upcoming special issue on “Ethnicity, Nationalism and Education”. The reviews are intended for publication in SEN volume 13 number 3 (2013). The deadline for submission of finished review articles is 1 June 2013 (early submission is greatly appreciated).

Authors are welcome to review volumes of their own choice, as long as they deal with the topic of “Ethnicity, Nationalism and Education” and have been published within the last two years. Examples of relevant themes that may be discussed in the books under review include:

•       Hegemonic education and ethnic minorities
•       Cultural autonomy and education
•       Schools and nationalist education
•       Educational attainment and xenophobia
•       Education and nation-building in developing countries

Exclusive Preview: Neo-Nazi Nationalism

In the first preview of our current focus on violence and extremist groups, SEN Journal: Online Exclusives is pleased to present an extract from Amy Cooter’s ‘Neo-Nazi Nationalism.’ 

Abstract

In an effort to understand how supremacists may respond to future socio-political events, this article examines how White Aryan Resistance (WAR), as a major player in the White Supremacist Movement (WSM), conceptualises nationalism and who qualifies as a ‘real’ American. I use discourse analysis on two year’s worth of WAR newsletters: twelve monthly issues before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and twelve issues after this date. Only partial support is found for outcomes that the existing nationalism literature would predict, suggesting that those who research the right-wing must better understand the WSM’s sense of status loss to adequately predict future violent action from these groups. I show that WAR did not increasingly target Arabs after the attacks, which may have enhanced their membership and mobilisation efforts, but that this decision was a rational response in the context of status threats and limited movement resources.
