Here’s the latest selection of nationalism and ethnicity-related news for this week!

 

 Open Democracy (10/08/2014) features an opinion piece on the changing role of religion and  ethnicity as identity markers in the post-Arab Spring countries.

 

The Gulf Today (13/08/2014) reports on the initiative of the Roads and Transport Authority of the United Arab Emirates to actively cooperate with the National Archives to boost national identity, preserve and showcase historical artefacts.

The National Opinion (14/08/2014) features a piece offering some reflections on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of independence from colonial rule of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Channel NewsAsia (14/08/2014) features a piece reporting on and analysing the appointment of an ethnic Chinese Christian as the governor of Jakarta.

The Japan Times (16/08/2014) reports on the release of a debut CD by the Balkan Chamber Orchestra put together by a Japanese conductor in a deliberate attempt to unite people from different ethnic groups and nationalities of the former Yugoslavia, including Serbians, Kosovars, Macedonians and Bosnians.

Karen News (17/08/2014) features an interview with the founder of the Shan Women’s Action Network in Burma detailing the maltreatment and suffering of the Shan ethnic people, especially women, in the region.

Democratic Voice of Burma (17/08/2014) features a piece reflecting on the origins and historical evolution of the term ‘Rohingya’ and its implications for self-identification.

The Wrap (17/08/2014) reports on the 20th Film Festival in Sarajevo featuring films dedicated to war-time life in the city and dealing with the legacy of destruction and protracted conflict.
